Updates

Updates on my life:

1. I think I have a really strong immune system..The other day I was working as a ball runner again for a soccer game. (ball runner, like the name suggests, means I basically run after the ball. Now now I know what you’re thinking BUT I need you to know that I’m seriously desperate for cash and since I get $8 an hour for running after a ball AND I get to sort of watch the game AND exercise at the same time..so why not?)

So it was 8pm at night, the temperature dropped to around -2 celcius and I was freezing my ass off. I had on me around 3 layers and then..it started raining. T_________T So basically I was running after a ball for 90 minutes under the rain in -2 celcius.

And I did not fall sick.

But! I shall not jinx it. I shall take some vitamins now just in case. (not that i have any wtf)

2. There’s only one month left before Thanksgiving, and 2 weeks after Thanksgiving and this semester will be over. Whaaaat? Time really flies, especially when you’re always lonely and sad wtf (kidding! I’m so not sad ok =D I’m happy all the time see! =D =D happy alllll the time!)

3. I have a very very sad news. For winter, Barry and I were supposed to go on a trip together. Actually this was supposed to be a surprise from me to him but tada no surprise anymore :( We were supposed to go to Florida and Disneyworld and Universal but I just thought about it and realized that I cannot possibly spend so much on a trip. $700 for one person, $1400 for two.

I don’t think it’s that expensive considering that it includes return flight, 7 nights hotel stay and the theme park tickets but..I guess it’s better to have $1400 extra in your bank than spend it frivolously on a trip..I don’t know what do you think? Should we just go since we’re in the states and there might not be a chance to do this next time (which is quite bull actually..if I think that way then I should go everywhere since I might not have a chance to do it next time right) or should I just save it and stay in the whole of winter and not have fun while I still can?

I dunno..the idea of spending so much on something so unsubstantial like ‘seeing something we’ve never seen before’ or just for the idea of having fun doesn’t seem too good to me. How T_T

4. I’m not planning to go back for summer and will try to look for an internship here instead. I told my mom this and she said I must come home T__T wuwuwu I really wanna go home too but I think getting an internship here will be better. Ahh decisions decisions. If I don’t go back in the summer and only go back the summer after that, I guess you all can’t see me until May 2010.

2010. Sounds like such a loooong time from now.

Wawasan 2020. yippee. Do you remember the wawasan 2020 song?

bendera berkibar di angkasa,
lambang negara jaya,
rakyat sepakat sehati sejiwa,
tekad berbakti dengan megah..

wawasan 2020
satu pandangan jauh
bukan impian malah kenyataan
bersama kita jayakan

(i’m a big fan of all these songs. tanggal 31..sejahtera malaysia..singing these songs on the merdeka day is one of my favorite times of the year =) )

2020, not a long time from now anymore.

omg how did i get to this topic??

Ok I gotta go do ballrunner for a volleyball game now! $_$ wtf

    dear thelma liew wtf,

I’m having the same dilemma of trying to fit in a $2700 aud trip to toronto into my summer plans but I don’t know whether I have the time, because after I’m done with my internship I’ll be left with about 2 weeks before I start my 3rd year.

will $2700 be worth spending to see my loved one for 2 weeks as opposed to saving up $2700 for a better time which obviously won’t be anytime soon seeing that my schedule is really packed once uni begins next year? wtf.

    haih.

eh btw i think if you have the funds, u should go for the trip. once in a life time experience. and a nice little break for you and barry! :)

    CraSH says:

no comments on your trip! it is up to you becuase it depends how much you feel the worth of the trip… but i am sure you both can still hang out over the break without breaking the bank.

as for internship! i agree with you. an internship here would mean more and i am sure you will learn lots more too becuase how firms work here is different than in msia. in addition, they pay pretty well here… however, if you want to land an internship, you should be applying now.. i believe the recruiting seasons ends by december. so get cracking!!…

    CraSH says:

oh!! i forgot.. why dont you apply for internship in nyc.. you can stay with your girl friends and transportation is not a problem in the city… besides, you can save a little by spreading the cost with your roomate!! haha…
    anyway, good luck.

omg i wanted to do the same this winter. actually im planning is to get my friends to go with my bf n I over the winter. if we can road trip down there, we just have to worry bout the tickets. we can also share the hotel etc. u can join us if u want..
wanted to ask suann n carol but i think they’re going back

btw where u got the $700 package from? is it a good hotel. pretty good deal right..

    Anivyl says:

hi! have been reading for a short time now. Personally, I had suggest doing the internship, whether now or later, it’s not a big issue. The thing is being just a first year student (if i remember right), internship now might just be a little bit overwhelming.

So perhaps do it in your second year or so, and just relax after your first year. after all, it’s been a stressful first year, away from everything you are familiar with.

    but just my opinion ^_^

i think u should go for the trip unless u become really really broke after that. ^^ like someone said b4, it’s a once in a lifetime trip.

    aw says:

Eh no what only 2 friends only *big wet eyes

    OK.

Unless $1,400 is going to leave you eating cup noodles for the next semester – listen to the Sunscreen Song by Baz Luhrman (“BAZ” it’s a sign wtf). Stare at a Nike commercial. Google for something like “advice from wise old people on life”. Then WTF book the tix to Universal Studios and Disney World before they get sold out or increase in price.

    • If it’s above your means, don’t do it. Live within your means. If it’s within your means, money can be earned back. The opportunity and time cannot. I’m guessing that since your parents can send you to MH, you can afford this one trip. Maybe Barry can pay for meals & souvenirs.
    • Universal Studios ROCKS even with the long waiting times *gigantic humongous big wet eyes
    • “I’ll do it next time when I have more time and more money” is a killer of plans – it’ll probably never happen. I didn’t make it to Las Vegas or Grand Canyon :( ((. Now that I’ve graduated, worked, have the money – do I have the time or the people who’s free to go..? Will you have time when you are making money..?
    • Disney World is fun when you’re still a student. When you’re too much grown up – not so much. The next time you probably go – when you have your kids in tow.
    • The trip will invigorate both of you and re-energize or inspire you to do better and to perform better. Work hard, play hard. Lazy play = procrastinating, excessively surfing the web, doing things too slowly. Hardworking play = planning, going and preparing for possible hassles in Florida to have fun! Fun = fuel for the soul. Even F1 drivers take pit stops and refuel so they can win the race.
    • If it makes you feel less “guilty”, maybe set yourself a target to work for a good GPA to earn it.

Notice that those who suggest you not to go – will be the young ones who also feel tight with money and don’t realize as long as you’re within means you can earn it back. Those who say go for it – will be those who are older and has been done that and wonder what would they do if they had the chance all over again. like me wtf :D

Whatever decision you make, no need to think too much. Imagine if you are there in Florida with Barry – if you notice you are smiling a bit and your heart gets aflutter, then you know your answer. If not, then start downloading more movies for the coming cold, cold, bleak winter :D

    eeflin,
hahahhaha u crack me up grrrl hahahhaha have u seen tht pic wtf. u know maybe u can split tht 2700 between the two of u? if u really cannot afford it la. how long havent u seen him? i kinda think u should go for it too except tht 2 weeks is kinda short…..haih dunnola dilemma!

    crash,
hey i really have to start looking but im planning to work with an ngo this summer..do u think that’s a good plan? it’s in nyc but i wont get paid, but i can apply for a grant that gives me allowance..

    anivyl,
why ur name so hard to spell wtf. i’m a 2nd year student! i did an internship last yr too, an another one the yr before. but thanks!

    terry,
ahhhh dilemma!! now i lagi dunno wht to do!

    aw,
omg aw your comment rocked my day. okla not thta kua cheong but i really like it! wht 2 friends? or 33 and giang ah wtf.
ok if i spend the 1,400, i won’t have much left in my bank. i can still survive yes, but i was planning to use the money to either pay back a little of my loan first before it gets too much to bear, or use it as my allowance this summer since i’m staying here and i’m planning to work in an ngo that won’t pay me.
-please dont say that they can afford to send me here=i’m richer than other ppl=i can afford a trip! i mean i’m not offended la but seriously what do u think? should i go for a trip and not save the money for other more important stuff like paying back my loan/use it in summer to survive?
-all your other arguments are very persuasive! and yes i did smile a little..but is that really the right answer? should i be sensible, follow my mind, plan for my future, or follow my heart and desire which is to just have fun and think about all that later?
-your last line made me weep a little wtf

    jaclyn says:

how about, instead of spending that much going to florida, have a holiday some place closer by which is still new and foreign to both you and barry, and will cost the fraction of the price? personally, to me, i feel that when you’re going for a holiday as a couple, it doesn’t really matter where the destination is, but more about what you do together to make the time worth while. the U.S is huge, and i’m sure there’s heaps of other places that are much cheaper than both of you have not explored yet. perhaps try a relaxed backpacking trip around a neighbouring state or something? it’ll still be cheaper, you can still have a decent place to stay (perhaps a cheap motel which basic necessities) and have the opportunity to go out there and explore.

though i have to agree, it is a once in a lifetime opportunity, and to do florida and the theme parks while you’re young makes it much more fun than when you’re older. but if the monetary sacrifice is going to make you a tad bit tight on money, and since that money can be put forth to a “better” use so to speak (repayment of your loan), i personally feel don’t blow the whole some on a holiday. might as well repay what you can, before it gets too big a burden, or put the money into good use like a fixed savings for the future.

just my two cents worth, hope nothing offended you!

arlooo mighty suet. hmm, spending over thousand bucks for vacation is kinda expensive, in usd somemore. the economy is dying now, better save the extra bucks in the bank. i’m sure you and barry can go for many many trips all around the world when you guys started to work later =)

hi suet! i just wanted to say that if you really want to go on a trip with barry you could always try a different, equally new for the two of you but just not as expensive as florida place, just as another commenter suggested. BUT if you have your heart set on disneyworld email me and i’ll give you some tips for not spending a lot of money, because i went this year with my bf for my birthday on a super budgeted trip and kept it to $500-$600 per person for 5 days… (best trip ever)

    Faizal says:

I think you should go for the trip. Why want to think about money because at the end, you’ll spend the money on something (clothes, food, etc.).Maybe you can do it after you get a job, but do you really think you’ll have the time in future and probably you’ll think whether worthy to spend your salary on trip or future necessity (car, house, future family, etc.).I think you can stay at hostel to cut cost, this sound funny but your main concern is going to Disneyland and Universal, at least you get a place to sleep, that’ll be find – backpacker rule!!. Also some hostel do have couple bed. So you can stay with your bf in the same room. FYI, I spend roughly around $1500 last time for SF, LA, ANA, SD, Vegas. Quote I learned last time from there “Sometimes you have money, but you don’t have times, sometimes you have times, but you don’t have money”. Hardly to find someone get both. That’s one of the reason, old folks there live in RV, because don’t have time travel before. Hope you have fun during your semester break.

    aw says:

ack, didn’t mean the last line to affect you like that.

If you’re serious about working for the NGO, then that sounds like you might not have enough for the summer.

If things will get rough, then better leave the trip for next Thanksgiving. Or, right after you graduate, take a month off, rent a beat up convertible (the US is made for road trips!!! *shiny vroom vroom eyes) and visit all the places you’ve heard about.

I went with a girl to Florida in Thanksgiving of.. what was it.. ’00 or ’01. We rented a big ol American car (maybe a Monte Carlo) for cheap and drove the 15+ hours down there. We spent one night sleeping in the car, in the parking lot of Wendy’s (or was it Burger King) to save money. Not that bad but it was cuddle-mania to keep warm. But by gosh, that was one of the best times of my life. Cruised by various towns (and stopping whenever we saw an outlet mall or nice food), Daytona Beach, etc.

Anyway, yeah maybe take a trip to closer place, go camping etc. Can’t go wrong with a road trip (actually plenty of things might be unexpected like speeding tickets and unscheduled stops to see the World’s Biggest Ball of Twine but that’s the fun har har). But definitely do something fun, and leave enough for your next summer.

10 years from now, you’re probably not gonna say, “DANG! I’m now working 3 jobs plus cleaning the McD’s toilet just to pay off my student loan just because I had too much fun!”. At worst it will be, “HAHA. We spent so much. But you’re only young once and it was probably worth it. I love life. And now I’m making $10,000 a month but I’m stuck in this darn cubicle wtf and have to finish this presentation by this week wtf.”

There’s also the always effective, “Dad & mom. I worked hard all semester and going to get a 3.8 GPA. Your little girl, like any other little girl, has always dreamt of being a princess in Disney World. Can you help me out a little? I will think of you when you’re old and have to buy you ginseng and bird’s nest. Haha. I love you.”

Hi! Long time not leaving a comment here d!

My own honest opinion: Have fun and have less money. Money is meant to be spent for, err FUN? Get better paid jobs, or is that possible? I dont really know, i get around RM60+ for an hour of private tutoring in HK.(And im underpaid actually) Easy job compared to picking up balls i guess?

Coming back Malaysia is a swell idea if you dont work. I find that having to intern in Malaysia during your summer holidays makes no point at all lol! I just relax and go out with my friends like, every day? They are studying in US too hahaha. Totally not same with you i guess, they dont think much of internships hahahah.

Damn i dont know any of those songs. Chinese independent schools treats Merdeka day as any normal day, really. We dont have jabatan pendidikan to attend to and, maybe the school board and management were not patriotic?

    Very long comment =.=.
Last thing: You know someone called Geng Liting from HKU? She exchanged to Mt Holyoke before i think.

And if they want to hire you after your internship is over, you won’t be able to work for them cause you are still need to go back and finish your sophomore/junior year. It will be such a waste.

And I think we should go back(M’sia) and spend time with our friends now cause we are all still studying. So they sure got time to come and hang out etc. But if you go back when many of them start working, finding time to meet up would definitely be a challenge. We are not young anymore. I think the time we spend with our friends now are very limited.

Hehe!! Anyway, sorry for the long comment. Just wanted to tell you these cause I spent 2 years thinking about my plans on summer vacation and my internship. Might be beneficial for you too.

p/s: Come to Florida la! We go Disney Land sama-sama! Hehe! I understand that money wise would surely be a prob though.
