About blog advertising
I don’t know if I’ll get in trouble for this entry but what the heck if I do I’ll just deal with it later.
Anyway it’s a long boring entry, you can skip this.
With the emergence of blog advertising companies, I’m getting more and more consumed with all that has to do with it lately (not lately, it’s been going on for years now, my erm, feeling of being consumed wtf) that it’s sort of driving me crazy.
When I started out 5 years ago, I couldn’t care less about my hits. All I cared about was how many comments I got cause with comments, it means that people do read things I say and have something to say in return instead of merely dropping by to look at pictures. I first learned how many people actually read me in a day in 2007 and was rather baffled by the numbers. In today’s standard, it probably isn’t much anyway but it came as a shock to me back then still.
Then along came blog advertising and using your blog as a money-making medium and all that jazz. I was never really against the idea cause you know me and how my life is practically all about how to be the person with the most money in the bank wtf. So I added the advertisements and was surprised at the amount I actually earned. This was real money, not just virtual money. This was money I could take out of my bank and buy real stuff you know, money that can pay for my education or clothes or..money I can survive with.
Merely being receptive to the idea of making money with my blog and earning whatever I could get without being too bothered about it slowly turned more and more…what’s a good word for it..erm crazy? I dunno. What more when there are so many other bloggers who are also doing the same thing, it just makes everything seems like a big ugly competition.
And then there comes the popularity issue. How to be more popular, how to write to attract more readers, how to get yourself invited to events, how to make sure your readers stay, how to this that this that this that. And then there are the haters. The trolls of da internetsss. Their sole mission in life is to show that when there’s fame, there’s shame. They trawl the internets for gossips and dramas and thrive on them. They read pages and pages of archives to dig for one tiny trivial blunder in your life and highlight it to the world.
Trolls make up a very interesting species in the internets. They exist to set society straight, to send the message that there’s always a trade-off out there. It’s either this, or that. Either you want fame at the expense of having your dirty laundry aired in public, or you keep a low profile and enjoy the privacy.
Actually what is my point of this entry ah? I kind of forgot along the way wtf. In fact I’m just thinking as I write.. Ok what really sparked this off is years of suppressed thoughts about this very different world of blogging today. A world where it’s no longer just about reading about a friend’s life and what she has been up to lately, but a world of advertorials and posts designed to market yourself to garner extra hits. I’m not pointing fingers here I’m talking about myself ok so don’t perasantan so much.
What also sparked this was when I came to my blog and was taken aback at how green it is. Wait so now I can have a brand plaster their products all over my blog for money?? You mean I don’t have to study my ass off for a degree and find a job and work 60 hours a week but just sit here and write and get the same amount of money for it? Why am I still in college?!
Yeah there are days when I feel kind of dirty (in a bad way not in a rowr sexy kind of way wtf) when I accept advertorials, because that means I’m whoring myself yet again. But the money is tempting..very very tempting. There’s no need to spend 2 hours commuting to work, no need to get yelled at by your superiors, no need to spend 10 hours doing something you don’t enjoy.
Wait that’s not it you know. There are so many other issues behind the scene. Catfights, backstabbings, snitchings, ways to market yourself in ways you cannot imagine etc. I never got the idea behind all these. I innocently asked a friend once, why would someone take this whole blogging issue as a competition when everyone can equally be the best right? Isn’t this mutually exclusive? I have my readers, and those readers can read your blog and we both win! Where is the need for a showdown?
But things aren’t as easy as that. I’m going to spare you the complexity of how things actually work but let’s just say it’s ugly. It’s really really ugly. All bloggers (especially well known ones) aren’t as simple-minded jolly happy nice kind benevolent people as they depict themselves. That doesn’t exclude me, especially when this whole issue concerns big bucks. And i’m talking crazy CRAZY money here. 4 digits. 5 digits. even 6 digits for some people o.0
So what is it going to be?
What is the value of my blog now? Everytime before I write a personal public entry that showcases my life and my pictures, I wonder if this is the right choice. Is this going to be the post people will pick on? Is this the post that will be the subject of scrutiny? Iyer why is she thinks she so pretty why she likes to show her face so much why she so shameless why she talks about her boyfriend so much she just wants to make people jealous.
Ok I don’t want to sound arrogant but I do have a rather considerable amount of readers a day (maybe less now that I’ve changed my rss feed back to normal. that’s a story for another day). I wonder all the time if these few thousand people read me because they truly like me, or are they hawks, waiting for my downfall so they can start collecting bits and pieces of my broken parts to gloat about. See I told you fame is no good. See you asked for it when you started getting too personal with your blog.
omg this is a long entry my thoughts are all disjointed but here is where I shall end for now. This post has a lot of innuendos, things that I’ve been wanting to say for some time but never have the guts to. But here I leave anyway in confusion with the ambiguous line to be drawn. At which point does this crazy world get too much? Will I regret all the things I’ve written about in my blog? Will this be good for me in the future? I mean obviously I will never get that popular to the point that I have people harping on everything I write or digging my deep dark secrets out..
Should I get less personal first in preparation for this? You know all the hoopla about companies now reading employee-to-be’s blog and all that. Will I lose the essence of who I am if I start detaching myself? Will I lose my readers? All the fame and money I now have? (yeah i know it’s not much but it’s a lot more than I’d ever imagined) But I do really genuinely like sharing my life with everyone else..

Funny. I remember tokking to Pinkpau about this.
I said to her that I think one of the reasons I have so many haters is because I am getting less and less personal with my blog. Like on my blog I don’t talk about my relationships, I don’t talk about my arguments, I don’t talk about where I work etc.
I’m surprised when I learnt that a lot of ppl actually find it disrespectful that I don’t talk about who I’m dating on my blog. I mean, after all a lot of other bloggers oso don’t talk about their dating life on their personal blogs (hint: one of the commenters up there)
But why aren’t they getting any flak?
so when ppl found out that i am/was dating and yet I never blog about her, suddenly my supporters went against me. And when I have arguments with certain ppl and i don’t blog about it, suddenly they went against me again. and that is why when trolls find out these information (which is not that hard to find anyway wtf) they air my dirty laundry all out as if to claim credit that they found it first.
anyway my point is (see my thoughts getting disjoined oso ‘cos readign too much sweatlee.com) here I am thinking that the reason for all these hate is because i am getting less personal with my blog. if that’s the case, maybe I should make my blog more personal again. Maybe I should blog more about my work, my relationships and put up my ic number etc for all to see wtf. And there you are thinking the other way. haha
I guess regardless of whether your blog is less personal or more personal, trolls will always be trolls.
i still think that there’s a proverbial middle ground where blog advertising and personal blogging can co-exist. these things are not mutually exclusive. of course you’re gonna piss some ppl off because some ppl are 100% against blog advertising like that. these are the same ppl who can only accept endorsements from singers and actors and models like hannah tan and amber chia. they cannot accept bloggers doing endorsements, despite the fact that bloggers are paid 1000 times less than models and actors for the same job.

I think thats quite hard to find nowadays. What first attracted my attention was your kiamsiapness, haha. I get cheap trills from nice RM10 shirts, and always think damn long before purchasing stg that even my mum hates shopping with me.
I think it’s ok for you to accept blog ads…who would say no to $$$ anyway? But what i find annoying is that many blogs have the same ads. I really hate this shade of green and i see it everywhere argh! If not it’ll be that giant honda ad omg wth.

At the end of the day – its all about the money la come on. People like you have it easy these days – just because you have high UVs, companies choose your blog to run their campaign. Like your readers will be lured to buy more Heineken and choose it over Tiger? Brand awareness , brand presence, whatever you want to call it – its all marketing B.S. to earn more money.
And what competition you talking about? The blogging community here is bias la, come on as if you don’t know like that. Certain ads or campaigns are given to certain bloggers and that kind of bloggers only. Talk about monopoly.
Fame and money (and blogs) will fade away someday. It is how many lives you’ve touched and how you’ve inspired people to have hope and to carry on in this dark world is what matters in real life.
Do you want your tombstone to read “Blogger. Camwhore. 5k Hits Per Day – Will Be Deeply Missed” or would you rather have “A great friend, a faithful wife, a good mother – Will Be Deeply Missed” ? Think about these things Suet. Haiyo.
Some may look tough, pretty, skillful, popular, happening etc on their blogs. Try stripping everything they have to a bare minimum of what a human needs, throw them out in the real world and see how’d they fair la.

what is all about money? blogging you mean? blogging is NOT all about money to me. maybe i’m slightly more motivated to blog more because of it but i’d say that’s they’re very very low in correlation.
about the competition. again, i dont know who is it directed at. you speak as if from experience so i dont want to comment too much on that in case it gets touchy. but from what i know ads are given based on hits. i cant comment more on this cause i dont work with them anymore.

We got to admit it, people nowadays, most new or young or even old bloggers are in it
for the money and purely money and fame only.
Not everyone is there sincerely for their blogging habits or passion.
It’s a shame then that the ads are based purely on good hits, (despite the fact that
it makes sense as advertisers would want to send a message out) but I know for a fact there are tons of other bloggers who can equally send that message out or even better despite not having the number of hits as other bloggers do when some bloggers out there can’t write for nuts or make any sense of their advertorials that they ought to be shot.

But correct me, I did not understand your comment when you said ‘you are no longer working for them anymore’. Does this mean all the while you were purely working under an ad agency constantly throwing
advertorials out, reaping the benefits and then suddenly now you grew a conscience?

makes that person a bad friend etc.
But it seems to be you are letting the blogging aspects define who you are which is why you are ranting it out on this post.

to be honest i dun like the shade of green with the header which i do like but it doesnt bother me really because i’m here to read content i really like, the green ad becomes superficial and unimportant aesthetic issue because i can dig deeper and find out about someone….. many a time i feel a connection which i think everyone needs now and then and am happy for it. if brands products desire a presence you can give them and you can earn an honest living by it why deny that? why worry about the high and mighty attitude some people adopt to feel a sense of superiority? in the real world we are are all here to survive. i think the best judge of whether this is acceptable is yourself, if you are honest with yourself and you can live with it, the attitudes of others matter very little in comparison, and your audience will come naturally. there is some responsibility involved in blog advertising, and i think the best bloggers out there understand that and takes it seriously. i’m tempted to get into the evils of some corporations behind some seemingly harmless products but no lar i’ll spare u hahaha. i think it is important to be informed about the product and therefore the corporation you endorse but that is all, there is no right and wrong in endorsing a product.

anyway i guess the reason i continue to read is that i find ur honesty in what u write rather refreshing. and altho u have ur bimbo moments sometimes (dont we all?), there are times that what you write is smart, personal and real.
and dont bother abt trolls, i think they are just mean petty ppl who have nothing better to do than dig something out and air it to the whole world.

haha when i say you’re not defined by your blog, i mean, strip away your blog, strip away your readership, fans, ads etc… (no, don’t strip. wtf) and see that your core, your identity is not built around these things, but rather built around knowing who you really are deep inside, and knowing that the people around you know know you and love you for the person that you are. blog or no blog.

Honestly, some bloggers write their blog advertorials in a really funny & engaging manner, and I really don’t mind reading them. This green page in front of me or those LG blogskins, I don’t mind (even though it sloowwwwws down my PC… time for an upgrade?).
However, I do get irritated when the same blog posts (blogvertorials???) appear everywhere all at once. I feel like I’m changing radio stations, but the same song is playing on every single one. For that, I don’t blame the blogger, but the advertiser for poor “quality control”. Instead of unleashing all those posts on the readers at one go, they ought to choose a select few (like 1-3) to write about the product. No point advertising and re-advertising on blogs who have the same readership. Of course, this will trigger the “competitiveness” that you mentioned earlier…
I don’t blame you (or any bloggers) if you want to write adverts for anything that comes your way because after all, money is money. Why try to stop someone else’s rezeki? I’m glad that you haven’t taken the lazy-ass way of writing them (copy+paste from advertiser’s website / media pack followed by camwhoring session galore) though, unlike some others. Having said that, I would be REALLY interested to find out how you can make random stuff like… water tumblers, toenail clippers and tractors sound enticing should those manufacturing companies decide to advertise with you.
For the sake of the continuity of blog advertising I really really hope that there is more quality control from the advertiser’s side.
As for popularity, I think that the problem with the whole matter is that bloggers are usually thrown into the limelight, not TRAINED to be like celebrities, but who are suddenly treated like they are celebrities. People suddenly feel like it’s their right to demand for transparency, to gossip about them since “they asked for it” (by either : being attention whores or simply, by writing). For hate sites, you cannot do anything about it. The more discerning readers will be able to sift out what’s true and what’s false. Anyway, you don’t want to have readers who are so easily dissuaded by false information from your blog, do you?

also! about the companies, i def feel you. i googled my name the other day wtf, and i found my info. i started freaking out and told people to not link me etc. I guess it might be good to consider what future employers might think about each entry before you post em. but at the same time, seriously just be yourself. people love you for who you are =)
the main reason of why i quit reading kennysia.com is because he’s too commercialized already. normally i just stop reading my fave personal blogs if they’re becoming less personal, sorry for the truth

Suet, I was thinking bout this question as well. What’s happening in blogosphere, it’s like no longer fun as last time. However, you can continue write advertorial if you want, it’s your blog. I like way you write those advertorials with funny way.

anyway just want to say, its a disappointment lately to see bloggers only blog because they have advertorials to get done, other than that they rarely update like they used to be. anyway its their blog and its really up to them what they want to do with it, but as an avid reader to certain blogs, disappointment grows. it would be good if bloggers know how to balance bet ads and normal entries.

I do not against advertorial, but over-do-it is a bitch. Nobody likes to read a commercialized blog.
I dunno how much the advertising community pay the bloggers but is very irritating to see all the bloggers posting the same damn thing for the sake $$$$. This makes blog hopping no longer a fun thing to do at work.
I don’t mind to look at the advertorial if the bloggers do it in a creative/unique way. But some of them just trying so hard (yeah for the sake of $$$) and make the whole thing looks sooooo crappy!

hyee… i strongly believe that a lot of people read ur blog because they like the way you blog. i personally love reading your blog. there’s something about you that’s humble and down to earth making people relate to you easily. there’s a few bloggers out there that when you read their blog, you cant help but feel a sense of satisfaction when they get haters. but definitely not yours. so try not to worry soo much and continue doing what you’re doing right now

hi! have been your reader for about 8mths since this year and i think that you should continue on blogging about your personal life, its good, funny and real.
You’ve managed to stay pretty original all along. Can’t say what you write will not harm you in the future though.
You can write more personal stuff, get more hits, but risk getting it used against you next time. OR slow down, get less hits, less money. geez what a tough decision

Yours are okay compared to a lot of other well known bloggers because every alternate days I see new advertorials…

i had a post regarding blog advertorials saved in my draft 3 months ago. similar sentiments, but probably more vicious and offensive than yours. i didnt have enough balls to post it because i know many friends are with blog advert companies and a friend or two is even working with one. i wanted to post tht entry immediately when a particular advert came up, the berry and lemon blogs but i didnt cos i had more to write but wasnt arsed enough to get back to the entry cos i was damn busy.
i guess tht’s the straw tht broke the camel’s back (berry lomon thingamajig). i was more annoyed than angry but the sudden increase in brands whoring (despite not trusting in them or have actually used them before) irked me badly. but whatever it is, your blog is a good read. it is still personal and interesting. i guess people with similar disinterest and peeve towards blog advertising are miffed by the fact that blog companies can be rather unethical, conniving and bias. same goes for certain “popular” bloggers. i dont even need to mention who because we know who they are.
oh i used to idolise the few popular ones and then i realised that they are just mere bloggers like you and i. they were the predecessors yes, but not God wtf. and i dont take the pro- blogger shit. hire me, ask me to write/ sell your product/ advertise on my blog pffftt wtf dah la got namecard okay with the word pro- blogger -___________- dunno want to laugh or vomit WTF.
as for trolls, aiyah no life pls. shd get one from ebay wtf. some are amusing but others are downright offensive especially those with weird internet monikers etc. just because they hide behind a screen and internet anonymity, they think they are potent and invincible. pfft… losers.
i could never understand the effort they put in in harassing other bloggers. parody blogs are funny, as an audience, we thrive on someone else’s dirty laundry and when there’s more being aired out, we go crazy happy because the blogger who thinks he/ she’s all that looks bad. however, the thing is this. readers laugh and gossip about them. and the cycle (if there is one) ends there. there is nothing worth getting your panties in a knot for.
i wont term myself a stalker or a blog prowler wtf damn tak chun okay the world but i am a regular reader of yours, su ann’s, audrey’s, tze ching’s, and jia meei’s blogs. it’s sad when one lock their journals or stop blogging altogether because despite being silent readers, some are just mere readers with no malicious intention. well, just a little busybody haha. why should you get less personal anyway. in my opinion, tht’s how you retain your hits.
to be less personal and have more/ retain number of commercialised entries will only drive readers close to your internet self away. it’s a matter of striking a balance i guess. ok comment damn long maaf zahir batin. i hv more but i shd stop rambling uninteresting fluff.
oh when things get too personal to be blogged about, password protect them. BEFORE publishing lest some crazy prowler google cache them. trust me when i say im a regular blog reader. i read you since your xfresh days (expectationx damn power got X pls), audrey since her blogdrive days, and jmeei and tze ching’s livejournal. in fact i used to read su ann’s pinksykes hahaha. ok now i sound like a stalker wtf.
i think it’s not necessary to expose everything about you in your blog although it is call a personal blog, i do respect privacy and it’s ok to just tell what you want to tell, you will want people to expose themselves to you, but how about you??how much are you willing to expose yourself??
and about blog advertising. i do enjoy reading some of the ads. some ads are so nicely written, just like any of the other posts. writing ads also need creativity, ads are different on different blogs, isn’t it?? if you watch tv ads or radio ads, they repeat the same thing over and over again in a day, that will be boring, kan??

Plus, like it or not, the not-so-subtle subliminal message really does affect people and like you said, you have a lot of followers, a big number might be underage. The ad was something like celebrate with whatever beer right? Seeing 2 amputations after new year celebration because the patients got frostbite from being too drunk to go back home is more than enough for me thank you very much.

i do take my time and think of a certain advertorial before i write it, but i’ve had my share of badly written advertorials as well. it’s hard to talk about a topic when it’s mainly just about an event or a competition and what they want you to do is paste allll the info so ppl know about it you know. and sometimes it’s also hard making your advertorials interesting when advertisers have a strict guideline on what you can say and not say.
i so agree with you on the popularity issue! i haven’t faced a lot of that yet but some of my friends have and it’s just sad to see that they have readers saying stuff like ‘i used to like you but after seeing what so and so said about you i don’t anymore’. good reputation takes years to be built and it’s so easy to just destroy it based on someone’s false accusations. that’s just sad. i hope my readers aren’t like that.

I am definitely no one to give you advice or comment on what you should do bcos I am never in your shoe (not half as famous as you also. wtf) Although I think earning a 4/5 digit amount each month everyday is very very very super duper tempting, what is better than having your money banked in each month without doing any hard work and in fact by just writing something you ENJOY writing right?
But now the issue here is that you DONT enjoy it that much anymore due to a lot of reasons. Then why bother doing it then? Why dont you just write things that you like and leave your hits to your readers and dont get affected by those trolls, flamers (they are just way too free okay?)
To be honest, does it make you a happier person when you can write about what you want instead of what you SHOULD write? Will you be happier when people are inspired by your blog or will you be happier when you receive the pay cheque or whateva it is la, I havent received before you see. =P If something bad happen to you tomorrow *touchwood*, would you rather think that you have lived your life to the fullest and enjoyed every single thing that you have done in life, including blogging or would you rather stare blankly at the money in the bank and think why the h*ll would you spend so much time in pleasing people who reads your blog?

Ya, honestly I found Kenny’s older post is much more fun to read. Now the post is much more like reading advertisement with a bit of Kenny twist. Well, if the adverts are about events, it’s ok to write it. Look at it this way, you’re spreading information to people. No harm on that. If nobody writes adverts for events and competitions, would anybody know about it? These competitions and events will cease to exist. I started reading your blog a week ago, and I WAS going to only comment once i’ve reached your most recent post, but this particular one struck a chord so here goes.
1. Certain circumstances in my life has left me with a lot more spare time on me hands (new job, less OT, nothing dramatic k?) and one of the things i’ve done is reading up on some of the more popular blogs from scratch. You are one of the most, if not the most down-to-earth blogger i have come across so far. Not only are you not ashamed to admit your stingyness but you revel in the fact that you are. 99.9% of the people that i know that’s bought a shoe from bata would hide that fact just cause bata shoes are not ‘in’. And then there is Serene Liew, announcing to the whole web community, ‘woohoo, look at my bata running shoes that i’ve just bought. damn cheap & looks good on me too while i chase after tennis balls or whatever balls wtf’. A truly refreshing quality.
2. your grape-like boobies is compensated by the fact you have a kick-ass booty. (reference to an older post)
3. I find it absolutely 100%-ly ok with you or kennysia or any other blogger doing advertorials. Money maketh the world go round and who can fault any of you to try to make as much of it as possible. If david beckham/michael jordan/mawi appears in every other commercial/billboard you don’t see haters crucifying them just because of that. You use what you have in life. if you’re goodlooking, go and become a model for a living. If you are skilled in music, go become a piano teacher. if you are a famous blogger, go place an ad every now and then to generate extra income. I for one, am not perturbed.
4. posts about ‘bf and i’ are a bit too mushy mushy for me and makes me cringe sometimes. more ‘redang-bikini-clad-hot-chicks photo entries’ is what i say, YEAHHH!!!. but that’s just what I want. you cannot expect 100% of your readers to be happy with what you write all the time, so my advice is write what Serene Liew wants, whether it is more or less personal. It got you this far in the world of blogging. Why fix if it is not broken.

Well i use auslogisc for defrag and tune up ofr clean up. Before i had to restore my comp it went really fast. Now it restore it , i was told after a restore defrag and cleanup meant to go slower. Anything i can do to get it back up to the former speed

i just stumbled upon this post today; i started blogging in 2007 and then stopped and ive recently start blogging again. i’m amazed how much things have changed; the insane amount of readers and blog comments in each blog, everything is targeted at getting readers and money and advertorials; its a different whole new ball game.
i dun noe if i like it anot; but as i start my new blog, i wonder if it will affect my future job prospects if any of my employers look at it.
