freedom to shape their existence can be a blessing as well as a curse: humanistic psychologists maintain that this predicament can challenge people to make something worthwhile of their lives. They must all accept responsibility for making choices and directing their own destiny. For whether any of them asked to be born or not, here they are in the world and they are responsible for one human life — their own. To flee from their freedom and responsibility is to be unauthentic and ultimately to live in despair.
